What is a Pediatric Intensivist? A Pediatric Intensivist is a board-certified physician who is specially trained to care for critically ill children. When a pediatric patient (between the ages of newborn to 17 years of age) is hospitalized in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the intensivist is the physician who will examine, diagnose, and treat the child. The majority of the disease processes that are seen by our pediatric intensivists are respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia, acute asthma, RSV, and respiratory failure. Any time a pediatric patient requires a mechanical ventilator (respirator), an intensivist will direct their care. Other reasons for intensive care hospitalization include sepsis, shock, seizures, trauma, child abuse, cardiac monitoring, and complications from juvenile diabetes, to name a few. Should your loved one require hospitalization for a critical illness, rest assured that our trained staff are here to provide the best care possible. The links above and to the left will provide you with more information about the care we provide. |
